One of our favorite things to do during our weekends here in San Diego is check out the Little Italy Farmers Market.  We’ve been able to visit several farmers markets since our arrival last April, but the Little Italy one is by far our favorite.  We just love the fact that there are so many stands – giving you ample options for anything you might need.  Because of its overwhelming size, though, sometimes you don’t even know where to start or what to buy!  Here’s a list of some of our favorite spots at the Little Italy Farmers Market and what we love about them!

Sea Salt Candy Co

IMG_9713If you have even the slightest sweet tooth, you’ve got to check out the Sea Salt Candy Company stand.  They have a variety of products, but specialize in toffee and caramel.  The first day we saw this stand, I purchased the Old Fashioned Salted Caramel, and oh boy, was it good!  I was rationing out each candy to make the package last as long as I could, and even though John insisted that he hated caramels, one bite of this salty sweet morsol and he wanted so much more!

Aside from really liking the Old Fashioned Salted Caramels, I also LOVE the Claim to Fame Toffee.  It’s the one that made them famous – fresh chico almonds surrounded by a crunchy toffee and covered with dark chocolate, walnuts, and sea salt.  One piece of the Claim to Fame Toffee, and you better put that bag away before the rest are consumed without even knowing it!  The Sea Salt Candy Co. has the best toffee and caramels I’ve ever had!

Baba Foods

IMG_9717IMG_9715Baba Foods has a huge selection of handmade hummus, salads, and pita chips. I’ve tried my fair share of hummus in my life, but none compares to Baba’s.  You can spot their stand by finding the crowd gathered around their line-up of samples.  With their multiple varieties of salads and hummus lined up for sampling, shoppers can dip any flavor of their pita chips into a delectible product, made out of the finest, freshest San Diego ingredients.  With over 10 hummus flavors, 3 dips, and multiple salads, you may be wondering what to get!

Our favorite Baba’s hummuses are the Roasted Sweet Bell Pepper and Roasted Garlic & Artichoke.  Both have such vibrant flavors, perfect for a healthy afternoon snack.  We also LOVE this Medeteranian Salad that they have – which is a blend of pesto, feta, and sundried tomatoes.  Their Caprese salad and fresh mozerella are also pretty bomb.

California Fresh Almonds

IMG_9720IMG_9722San Diego has the perfect climate for growing delicious almonds, and this stand takes their almonds to a whole new level with their exceptional seasonings.  They have a variety of roasted almond flavors: Chipotle, Dry Roasted, Honey Cinnamon, Honey Vanilla, Italian, Lime & Sea Salt, and Mexican Chocolate.  To be honest, they are all great.

John’s favorite flavor is the Lime & Sea Salt, while I can’t decide between Honey Cinnamon, Mexican Chocolate, and Italian.  I just think they all taste so good.  They are so healthy and so delicious – you can’t go wrong.  And on their website, they have really cute gift tin options, I’ve gotten them for several birthday and Christmas gifts, actually, and the recipients loved them!

Polito Family Farms

Aside from selling outstanding citrus fruits, this stand is a must-see each time we’re at the market – we always beeline over for a container of the best lemonade I have ever had.  I’m not exaggerating here – John and I are huge fans of lemonade and have a very high standard for the perfect glass of this refreshing beverage – and Polito Family Farms exceeded our expectations!  All their citrus produce and other citrus drink options are amazing, but if you’re a fan of lemonade, you certainly need to stop by this stand for a treat!

Nicolau Farms

Nicolau Farms specializes in Farmstead Goat Cheese – and they have their recipe down.  This is by far the best goat cheese I’ve ever had – even if you don’t like goat cheese (like John), you’ll be sure to enjoy this – it’s on a totally different playing field.  Their goat cheese comes in four exceptional flavors: Classic, Garlic Chive, Spicy Red Pepper, and Lavender Honey.

Although the Classic Chevre is exceptionally fluffy, and the Lavendar Honey sweet and delectible, the Garlic Chive is our absolute favorite.  Aside from adding the cheese to recipes, John and I enjoy it simply spread on nice crackers – it’s such a rich, yummy snack – and you can really taste how amazing the cheese is this way.  I’ve also purchased the Raw Goat Milk Feta, and would strongly recommend checked that out as well.  If you’re a fan of feta, you at least need to try a sample while at the stand, because it’s really amazing – probably the best feta I’ve ever had, which is saying something!

J.R. Organic Farms

My favorite stand to buy farm-fresh produce is J.R. Organic Farms.  While a lot of the other farm stands have a limited selection of produce, J.R. Organic Farms has a wide variety of fruits and veggies, and if I’m looking for something in particular, J.R. pretty much always has it.  Their produce always looks beautiful, feels fresh, and tastes great!

Meatmen Artisan Sausage

One of our most recent favorites at the Little Italy Farmers Market is the Meatmen Artisan Sausage stand.  We just discovered it a couple weeks ago, but have enjoyed their specialty “meat chubs” on more than one occasion.  With names like Naughty Constable, Juicy Scandal, and Tasty Treason, these meats are made to impress!  Our favorite flavors are Spicy Pepperoni and Flagrant Seed.  Since these fresh meats have a three-month shelf life – they also make a perfect gift!

Bitchin’ Sauce

Visiting the Bitchin’ stand is certainly an experience.  Aside from the opportunity to sample one of their three Bitchin’ flavors, (Original, Spicy Chipotle, and Pesto), you’re greeted by several smiling Bitchin’ employees, that will be sure to tell you how bitchin’ their day is, how bitchin’ the sauce is, and refer to anything else relative as “bitchin’”  It’s really quite a fun place.

One of the coolest things about the Bitchin’ Sauce is that it’s a vegan, gluten-free almond-based sauce, that’s not only rich in natural ingredients, but packed with flavor!  As they say, it’s Bitchin’ and saucy!  They also offer Bitchin’ Bars, which are energy bars made with organic dates, almonds, and spices.  The bars come in Original and Pumpkin Spice Flavors.

Our favore sauce is the Spicy Chopotle, and we are also a huge fan of the Pumpkin Spice Bitchin’ Bar.  I’d definitely at least try the samples at this stand – I promise you’ll be surprised at the delicious taste despite the healthy ingredients!

IMG_9733IMG_9751These eight stands are our favorites at the Little Italy Farmers Market.  Although we often buy products at a variety of other stands, these are some of our go-to’s, ones that we hit up every weekend.  Their products and customer service are all fantastic and I hope you enjoy checking them out as much as we do each week!
