At the start of 2013, John and I were unhappy. We didn’t like our jobs, our location, and most importantly, our mindset. We decided to move in January, quit our jobs soon after, sold our house and most of our belongings, packed up our tiny Honda, and left. We set out on a seven-week road trip across the country, traveling from Buffalo all the way down to Miami and then across the southern part of the US from there. We arrived in San Diego in late April and proceeded to make a life for ourselves.
When I first started this blog, I did it as a way to stay in touch with family and friends back home and share our travels and experiences with them. After the trip ended, I continued writing and it gradually evolved into something so much more. I’ve always loved writing, and writing about the things that I love comes naturally. Although this blog started out as a journal of our trip, it has transformed into a foundation for me to share the things I enjoy doing and hopefully inspire others to follow their own dreams and passions.
It was hard to take the first step on our unpaved journey – especially when we had no idea of where we’d end up. We quit the jobs we hated and found ones we loved. We moved from a city that made us miserable to one that we can’t get enough of. We ditched the stressfulness of owning a home and now rent a gorgeous apartment in the heart of San Diego, saving our extra money for other investments. We left behind an environment where the people around us weren’t happy or satisfied with their lives, and have surrounded ourselves with people who are determined, driven, and have life goals set for themselves. Instead of telling ourselves that we wish we could do something, now we have learned that we absolutely can. No matter what the dream or aspiration, with enough hard work, effort, and determination, anything is possible.
We hope that you, as our reader, can use our journey as your own inspiration. Reflect on your current situation and ask yourself what is making you the most unhappy – and change it! Set a challenging goal for yourself – one that even you aren’t sure if you can pull off, and do it. That’s right, I said: DO. IT. Need support or have questions? Reach out to us! We’d love to help you start your own journey! You’ll be amazed at what you feel like you can achieve after you’ve successfully accomplished your first goal, and then your second, and finally your third. Before you know it, you’ll be feeling unstoppable – what a great way to be!
As Tim Ferris said in 4-Hour Work Week, “Having an unusually large goal is an adrenaline infusion that provides the endurance to overcome the inevitable trials and tribulations that go along with any goal. Realistic goals, goals restricted to the average ambition level, are uninspiring and will only fuel you through the first or second problem, at which point you throw in the towel. If the potential payoff is mediocre or average, so is your effort.”
This is our story, this is our life, and these are our dreams. This blog takes you from start to finish of the journey, shares what we’re up to now in San Diego, and keeps you posted on what’s to come! We’re living our dream each and every day, truly enjoying every single moment. Life’s too short, I hope we inspire you to follow your dreams, too. Nothing is unachievable and no dream is too big.
Thanks for following our journey and reading about the rhythm of our lives.
